Mens Wardrobe Essentials: The Denim Jacket

I've started the Womens Wardrobe Essentials feature, and now it's time for the boys! The only problem was, I'm not a guy! Throughout this Mens Wardrobe Essentials segment, I'll be featuring different gentlemen with different styles wearing various essentials that every man need in their closet! I'll start with my friend Henoch Bellanton sporting the Denim Jacket.

Before I talk about the denim jacket, I've got to talk about denim! History of denim dates back all the way to the 1860's when soldiers of Giuseppe Garibaldi's army wore denim as part of their uniform. In 1905, Levi Strauss and Co. debuted their "over-sized blouse" made out of sturdy denim for those working in factories. This "blouse" weighed 9 ounces. Later in the 1930s it's name changed from "over-sized blouse" to "jacket". In 1962, Levi's made the double breasted pocket jacket as seen in most of our modern version. Soon after, with plenty 80's movies of motorcycles and rebelliousness denim jackets had become a representation on freedom and the rest is history. As years progressed the denim jacket has become a timeless piece, coming in different washes and textures, distressed or clean, every man needs this jacket.

I met up with  Henoch to get a guy's perspective:

"A denim jacket is a basic timeless piece that when worn in the right size will look good on just about any guy. Not only is it a classic piece, but it’s versatile, and can be pulled off in many fits. On a slow easy going day, I love being able to just throw on a denim jacket over a basic t shirt with some jeans for a rugged look. Slip into a favorite pair of tennis shoes, loafers, or boots, (depending on the mood) and I’m ready to go about my day."

On a faster paced day, where I might need to level up my look, whether it be for a causal function or even dress up for work, a denim jacket will work well with a buttoned shirt and/or tie and some trousers/dress pants. If you’re confident in your style, and it fits properly, you could even try layering it under a blazer. Don’t knock it until you've tried it!

Quality is a big concern for me when getting a denim jacket. I particularly will try to stay away from the fast fashion brands such as H&M or Forever 21 and go with something more notable for making quality denim products. Evelyn and I were talking about how we like that most denim jackets have those big pockets on the inside, which is cool for keeping small essentials (try not to add too much though, it’ll add bulk!) If you don’t have one get yourself one! Levis or GAP are recommended. There are some upper scale brands out there as well, but these are good for the quality and price point!"

Henoch literally took all the words out of my mouth! He's a natural!

Thank you Henoch and thanks guys for reading!

Love,
Evelyn
