New "Purpose" for Bed-Stuy Brooklyn

You’re what you’ll do, not what you say you’ll do. For four individuals who came together to start a business, they did it on purpose. Opal (pictured left) is a graphic designer (the genius behind HNOW’s logo) and a multi-hyphenate creative who’s electric personality could charm anyone in the room from the Mayor to the Make-Up artist. Through Opal I met her business partners, Darnell, Travis and Nancy who’ve come together to create IV Purpose [read: For (four) Purpose]. This chic sports bar sits in the heart of Bed-Stuy Brooklyn minutes away from Restoration Plaza on Fulton street that’s currently bustling with new Black-Owned businesses and thankfully right in Her neck of the Woods.

They might say West Indians always have 3 jobs, but what they wont tell you is its because they own multiple businesses. Purpose has been added to the existing list of business ventures for entrepreneurs Darnell, Travis and Opal ranging from graphic design, studio photography, and property management just to name a few. For Nancy, Purpose is her first business baby but she’s far from inexperienced. Having supported other Brooklyn restaurants from the ground up, her passion and work ethic made it inevitable for her to journey into entrepreneurship.

Sitting amongst this team feels like witnessing the inner makings of a Swiss watch. The way each persons function is compatible with the other is all on purpose for Purpose. What I love most about this quartet is the R A N G E of network each one brings to the table. It makes it easy to understand how networking across proves to be more beneficial than networking up. I’ve seen confirmations landing in minutes after making one phone call. What’s even better is the culture of family within their tribe. The way they engage with one another feels like they’ve known each other their whole lives and for some who I spoke to, they have. They marveled in the fact that IV Purpose was just an idea sometime ago, and here they are now enjoying the fruit of their labor. The support is a reflection of the relationships cultivated on purpose and for them, its not just having a contact in your rolodex - it’s work history, family connections, and how that persons network can best help you to live in your purpose.

If you want to go fast, go alone if you want to go far go together.

IV Purpose opened their doors on the tail-end of a peak of COVID 19 in New York City. How? Purpose. With strict policies on small businesses, the quarantine time served as extra buffering time to tie all their loose ends and prepare for a true grand opening. COVID 19 worked in their favor because of their purpose and what they wanted to see happen once they were opened for business.

Chef’s Kiss!

Now lets get to the good part: the food! With New York City’s slow reopening, allowing outdoor dining, IV Purpose has fired up their kitchen to offer a limited menu to get the buzz circulating around the neighborhood. Menu items include Vegetable skewers, Coconut shrimp, Wings, Salads and Paninis. The HNOW pick? The Vegetable skewers! If I could eat a meal a day, they’d have to involve those vegetables somehow. The head chef was born in Puerto-Rico and raised in Miami and he absolutely put his heritage flavor into his dishes.

IV Purpose Sports Bar has two floors of seating, decorated in art work from various Black artists from their diverse network and you’ll even find artwork from the newly closed Kinfolk adorning the walls. This spot for “guaranteed good food, specialty drinks and great service” is very much a sign of the times giving patrons masculine and feminine energy to unwind, connect, and have a good time. I cant wait to see IV Purpose packed from brick wall to brick wall safely (socially distanced of course, following the regulations of the city). Make it your purpose to stop by IV Purpose located at 1489 Fulton Street in Bed Stuy Brooklyn. Stay updated with them here and order online here!
