Thrift-Day!
Last Thursday was Thrift Day!!! When you shop at department stores, they have the same item ranging in sizes, but when you're thrifting, there's only one of each article of clothing and it either fits you, or it doesn't! I absolutely love thrift shopping because I KNOW that I will be the only one leaving the store with a one-of-a-kind item. A few people have asked"How do you thrift??! I never find anything!" I'm here to tell you that if you've ever gone through a sales rack at your favorite store, you've done some sort of thrifting. But I'm gonna try my best to explain how I do it.
To start things off, to "thrift" means to "use money and other resources carefully and not wastefully". So when your enter a thrift shop, you can expect to stretch your dollar! There are some thrift-stores where you can walk inside with "twenty dollars in your pocket" as Macklemore said and walk out with a load of stuff. Truthfully, you're not always guaranteed quality merchandise so be careful. At my thrift store, the prices range from $3.00 to $45.00(the highest I've seen). Another thing I love about thrift-stores, is that the majority of items are vintage pieces. Vintage styles are always trending by the season, no matter which decade. While some are paying $80.00 for high-waist denim at stores like Urban Outfitters, I paid $3.00 for mine! That's the glory of thrifting!
Here's a few things you should know:
- If you're in a rush - DON'T THRIFT
- If you're impatient/tired - DON'T THRIFT
- If you think you're gonna find something the moment you walk in - DON'T THRIFT
When you walk into your thrift store, it will look like this. A bunch of clothes on a rack. The first couple items will not be worth a glance, but there are some real treasures sitting in between your grandma's shorts and your moms super-flare pants!
The secret to thrifting is patience and a great eye for detail. You'll be walking down every aisle going through clothes like a flip book - searching for fly colors, beautiful fabrics and eye-catching patterns.
I CAN'T LIE. IT GETS OVERWHELMING.
Clothes just start looking the same. Your arm is getting tired, and an old lady is taking forever on the rack that you're dying to look through. But you really cant give up! On this trip to the thrift-store I was getting discouraged. I had gone through most of the racks and found nothing that fit quite right. Sometimes you will walk away empty handed. I thought today was that day.
I went through the racks one more time... lo and behold! I found these beautiful Ralph Lauren pants! For $13! They were a little long, but it's nothing a trip to the cleaners couldn't fix. I'm usually not the one to brag about brands, brands have nothing to do with style. But when I find brands at the thrift store, I want to shout from the roof tops!
I kept looking and found a silk blazer from Neiman Marcus!
Looked some more... and found a silk camisole from Jones New York for $3.99! I was in the fitting room getting side eyes and a few "I wish I saw that!" from other shoppers. Thrifting can easily boost your ego.
Some of my finds included:
- Ralph Lauren Pants $13.00
- Neiman Marcus Blazer $9.99
- Jones New York Camisole $3.99
- 100% Leather bag - $7.99
- Vintage Blazer $4.99
- Blouse $5.99
And to top it all off, everything was 50% OFF!
It was a good day! I paid $40.00 for items that would've cost me hundreds of dollars! Thrifting at it's best. I know a lot of y'all don't know where to find a good thrift store, don't worry. I've found a lot of great pieces here, here and here.
Happy thrifting!!
Love,
Evelyn
