Ruth Jean-Marie uses Haitian History to Create Custom NIKE Sneaker

In today’s episode of Her Neck Of The Woods, I met up with Creative and Founder of “The August Project” Ruth Jean-Marie who had the opportunity to team up with Nike/We Are Cultivator to create a custom sneaker inspired by the Haitian Revolution!

The sneaker, called the “Uprising” is the product of what happens when we dare to say “yes” to those ideas in our heads like seem like they could never happen to us. Ruth and I spoke about the mission behind her organization, the feedback she’s received from the Haitian Diaspora, and also the way capitalism has a major impact on what it means to be philanthropic in a time when so many of us want to disrupt oppressive systems.
