Your 2000's Love Interest
To be frank, when attending events, there’s nothing I hate more than a dress code. It places so much pressure on sticking to the rules and amplifies the dreaded fear of looking like everyone else. When I got the invite to attend Level 4 Entertainment’s Back to 2000’s Party, my mind immediately started racing. Does anyone remember the early 2000s? It was a strange time to be a trendsetter, whether you wore XXL sized white tees, super low-rise jeans or spray painted every item in your closet. Fast forward 20 years to 2020, I didn’t own anything similar to the popular era within Black Culture, and I had no time or budget to shop around.
I did what any millennial would do, I went to Youtube. I thought binge watching music videos from the 2000s would help until I noticed that I didn’t look like any of the girls in them. They rocked perms and crimps, and very few wore natural hair. I took my research to 2000’s movies and the ideas started flowing. Instead of looking to dress like a highschool teen, or a video queen, I opted to dress my age.
One of my favorite movies as a pre-teen/teen was Hitch starring Will Smith and Eva Mendez. It looked like it was set during the perfect time of a bachelorette’s life. Young, successful, beautiful, and single. I scoped through the movie like I was searching for a subliminal message. I was going to be Hitch’s type of love interest. Check out what I came up with below:
I chose to go with a crop top (Guess), leather print pants (Pretty Little Thing), and a white cropped denim jacket (Zara). It was unusually warm for a night in January, so I took advantage of the opportunity to really commit to the look. Can’t you just “picture me dancing real close in a dark dark corner of a basement party?” (Baby Boy, 2008)
